JUHI MEHTA

Painter

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hello! My name is Juhi. I’m a bioengineer by training, an aspiring physician, and I’ve been painting since I was five years old. Painting is the lens through which I view the world. I love playing with bright colors and unique lighting. My primary medium is acrylic paint, and I also experiment with gouache, pencil, pastels, ceramics, and sculpture. Through painting, I explore my Rajasthani heritage, divine feminine energy, human identities, and California’s breathtaking landscapes. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

PAINTINGS

OH How the Full moon yearns

Acrylic on canvas 16" x 20", 2024

This composition explores the divine feminine spirits of the ocean and moon in a blue color palette. I imagine them as star-crossed lovers doomed to be apart. The moon is at her fullest and reaches out as far as she can, but it’s sadly in vain. She’s formed of glassy moonlight and her pregnant figure radiates the energy of the stars from her fingertips. The day of the full moon is the day the ocean is the stormiest. She’s enraged, devastated, head buried in her hands, as she knows she’ll never be with her lover. The ocean takes on a feminine form sculpted from sea water, with hair cascading down in crashing waves.

BIRTHDAY BABES

Acrylic on canvas 11" x 14", 2024

Celebrating blossoming friendships, feminine leisure, and the euphoria of youth. Four girls are captivated by a conversation as they sit, bathed in striking lights of rich golden, amethyst, and fuschia hues. The inspiration for the painting comes from my friend Skyler’s birthday celebration in San Francisco.

Nanaji and Nanisa

Acrylic on acrylic paper 12" x 12", 2023

This portrait of my maternal grandparents is based off of a photo taken in 2001. I had just been born and my grandparents were visiting my family in the U.S. My Nanaji (maternal grandpa) passed away in 2021, so this portrait was my way of remembering him. My favorite part of painting this portrait was capturing the softness of their expressions and the kindness in their eyes. I also love the vibrancy of my Nanisa’s (maternal grandma’s) sari and the glow it casts on both their faces.

Chai and sitafal

Acrylic on acrylic paper 6" x 6", 2023

A study of my afternoon snack on a hot summer afternoon in Rajsthan, India. One of my aunts had brought me sitaphal ( sugar apple/sweetsop). I loved the the green of the sitaphal skin contrasted with the warm brown of my chai, all packaged together on my steel plate. A deep peacock blue background rounds out my color palette.

Dadaji and DADIji

Acrylic on acrylic paper 12" x 12", 2023

An ode to my paternal grandparents. An exploration of regal fabrics and gold. While visiting my family in Rajasthan, I gifted this to my Dadiji (paternal grandma) in memory of my Dadaji (paternal grandfather) who had recently passed. The original photograph was from their 50th wedding anniversary celebration. I was about nine years old at the time, and dancing with all of my cousins that day is still one of my favorite memories.

Antelope valley Superbloom

Acrylic on canvas 4" x 6", 2023

Witnessing a superbloom in person at the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve took my breath away. The vibrant orange of the poppies is paper-thin sunlight. The way the petals flutter in the breeze creates an image of hills coated in butterflies. I utilized an impressionist technique, with brushstrokes mapping out flowers organically.

Josh

Gouache on mixed media paper 9" x 12", 2022

This portrait explores intuitive impressionism and Desi aesthetics. I had no predetermined reference picture or color palette; instead, I let the image come together as I experimented. Through my eyes, the figure’s soul is ablaze and his mind is at peace.

serendipitous TRip

Gouache on mixed media paper 9" x 12", 2022

Whimsical brushstrokes inspired by a visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. I imagine it as the creative mind that rests behind a set of curious eyes.

PEACOCK

Gouache on mixed media paper 9" x 12", 2022

A peacock I painted in an intuitive impressionist style. Regal, with countless piercing blue eyes.

Sea turtle

Gouache on mixed media paper 9" x 12", 2022

A peaceful abstract-impressionist sea turtle, swimming through crystalline seas.

Iris

Gouache on mixed media paper 4.5" x 7", 2022

My best friend Iris. A wistful stare and rosy lips. I’m thankful for her kind eyes, which see my soul and accept me unconditionally.

Anjali

Gouache on mixed media paper 4.5" x 7", 2022

My younger sister Anjali. Captured from her high-school graduation party, a moment where I couldn’t have been prouder of her! Her wisdom and courage inspire me always.

ROHAn

Gouache on mixed media paper 4.5" x 7", 2022

My best friend Rohan, with an all-knowing look. He cares for me like a sister, and I’m so thankful for his compassion and spirit.

A study of my backyard in full bloom. Brush stroke botanicals and all shades of green.

ucla botanical gardens

Gouache on mixed media paper 4.5" x 7", 2022

Lush deep greens, a rare place for peace, rest, and rejuvenation in Westwood, Los Angeles.

MY THOUGHTS, BLACK AND WHITE

MY DREAMS are IN COLOR

Acrylic and pen on mixed media paper 7" x 9", 2022

A mixed media dreamscape. My hair melts into a rippling ocean as I dream, my skin is ablaze with soft orange and violet, and in shadow turns vibrant blue. Rippling lines, a splatter of dots. A girl looks to the stars and confronts the infinite and uncountable. The moon watches.

SCULPTURE

Stained glass mask

Hand-cut acrylic tiles, hot glue, gold metallic faux wax glue, copper wire, lamp; 2023

A stained glass-inspired face. I explored color, light and crystalline forms. An intersection of my artwork and my engineering background. A prototype for future 3D modeling.
